XenApp's VM Hosted Apps is XenDesktop 4.0
I don’t know why this news is bugging me so much? Is it because I didn’t listen to our Citrix system engineers or because no one told me? Citrix today release XenApp 5.0 Feature Pack 2 (FP2) which includes a nice niche feature called VM Hosted Apps.
VM Hosted Apps is nothing more then XenDesktop which is not publishing a full desktop instead it publishes a seamless application. The main difference is that you’re not using a Windows server operating system to publish a seamless application, you’re infact using some kind of Windows desktop operating system like XP, Vista and even 7. This has a hand full of benefits like full USB support.
You ask why to choose VM Hosted Apps instead of publishing your application with XenApp? I think there are exactly two use cases: (1) your application isn’t terminal server compatible or (2) your application vendor doesn’t support server operating systems or terminal services/XenApp at all.
This features was announced several month ago, so no a big surprise at this point. I think the most of us suspected VM Hosted Apps to be some modified XenDesktop 3.0 code but surprise: it really is XenDesktop 4.0.
While I have no information about when XenDesktop (XD) 4.0 is released as a stand alone product I want to show you which kind of features are new in VM Hosted Apps ehm I mean XenDesktop 4.0. More…

Normally I use Firefox on every OS, even on my Mac. So after the update to Snow Leopard was done, I just wanted to connect to a Citrix XenApp farm over WebInterface/Secure Gateway. After I logged on to the WebInterface and clicked on a published application nothing happens. Tried the same with Safari but also there nothing happens.
After doing a little research I found a solution for that problem at the Citrix Support forum. In detail there are actually two problems which have to been solved. More…
