Intel Atom/NVIDIA ION and Citrix XenDesktop – a match made in heaven for thin clients?
Today I received my brand new NVIDIA ION mainbord from Point of View which I bought to update my personal HTPC. But it came to my mind why no one is using this thing as thin client?
In my following article I assume that the customer is going to use Citrix XenDesktop for delivering desktops and applications to his employees. That means the thin clients are going to connect to Windows flavored desktops which are published through XenDesktop.
You can get a full featured NVIDIA ION-based PC for about 257€. Full featured means: Single- or Dual Core 1,6 Ghz Atom CPU, 2Gigs of RAM, 320GB HDD, Geforce 9400m GPU, Gigabit ethernet and even a DVD writer. Oh and yes, you can also use multiple monitors as you have HDMI, DVI and VGA video output.
The power consumption is also pretty low compared to a normal desktop PC, a DELL Optiplex 740n needs about 60 to 90 watts. The ION only needs about 20 watts in idle state and between 25 and 30 watts under full load. More…
Citrix Provisioning Server licensing
As I had a little conversation about Citrix Provisioning Services/Server (PVS) licensing with @xenappblog and I just wanted to give a quick overview about this topic.
There are two kinds of Provisioning Server licenses: Desktop and DataCenter licenses.
Desktop licenses are used to stream desktop operating systems like Windows XP, Vista, 7 and even a few Linux distributions.
DataCenter licenses are used to stream server operating systems like Windows 2003, 2008 and also even a few Linux distributions like Suse or Redhat.
As Provisioning Server is licensed per device you have to buy as much licenses as you like to stream operating systems to them. If you like to stream for example Windows XP to 20 clients you have to buy 20 Provisioning Server for Desktop licenses. The same goes for the DataCenter licenses.
In most cases you’re not buying PVS licenses itself. Instead you’re using a PVS license which is bundled to a Citrix product like XenDesktop, XenApp oder XenServer.
There are serveral products from Citrix where the Provisioning Server is included.
